Grant Opportunity Notice

OBX Community Foundation Now Accepting 2020 Grant Applications The Outer Banks Community Foundation is now accepting applications from nonprofits for its Community Enrichment Grants Program. The Program is the Community Foundation’s largest and broadest funding opportunity. In 2019 the Community Foundation awarded $280,000 in discretionary grants to 35 local nonprofits. The grants are offered on a competitive basis for any kind of charitable project that benefits the Outer Banks, or any part thereof. Areas of interest include: arts & culture; animal welfare; children & youth; education; the environment; disaster relief & prevention; health; historic interpretation & preservation; and other human services. BRPD Veteran Honored for Community Service

Sgt. Elvin Howard receives recognition by Chuck Wiley Foundation This past October 3, 2019, Sgt. Elvin Howard, Jr. was honored by the Chuck Wiley Foundation and presented with a  99 Wayz 2 Win  award for his community service work with Baton Rouge youth.  The event was held at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the campus of Southern University and A&M College.  Sergeant Elvin Howard Jr. is a 21-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department.  During his tenure with the Baton Rouge Police Department Sgt. Howard worked ten years in the Homicide Division, one year on a gang task force, and three years on the ATF Task Force.  Sgt. Howard is currently assigned to the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Community Services Division as the ReCAST Coordinator. During his time with ReCAST (Resiliency in Communities after Stress and Trauma), Sgt. Howard has organized several summer youth sports camps to address resiliency after stress and trauma amongst children ages 7-15 years ol

ReCAST Holiday Reception & Agency Recognition

ReCAST Baton Rouge coalition members gathered on December 19 at the Baton Rouge Botanical Gardens to receive official recognition of their work in 2019 from program organizers Joyce M. Plummer, Daryl Blacher and Vedette Bush-Jones.  Some two dozen agency representatives attended the event, including local government, nonprofit and faith-based organizations across Louisiana's Capital Region dedicated to building community and reducing trauma experienced by residents after the widely publicized violence, civil unrest and devastating floods of 2016.  Each participating group received a signed certificate of appreciation from East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President, Sharon Weston Broome.  Attendees shared news of their work to date and events planned for 2020 on behalf of the ReCAST effort, which is funded in part by the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
