Most religions have traditions of hospitality, service, compassion, and healing. Being trauma-informed builds on those values to strengthen communities and support people who have been hurt by violence or trauma. A person or setting is trauma-informed if they reflect the 4 R’s: Realize the widespread impact of trauma and potential paths for recovery; Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in individuals, families, and others; Respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma; and Resist doing further harm by creating an environment that avoids unintentionally reminding people of past trauma.
